c’est arrivé près de chez vous

“C’est arrivé près de chez vous” is a very well known black comedy. It is one of the most charming movies made in Belgium mixing different and creative visions of cinema in a full-length black and white movie.

It was made by Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel and Benoit Poelvoorde in 1992, the year they graduated. The movie is about filmmakers that are following a serial killer, played by Benoit Poelvoorde. They follow him everyday while he is committing murders on people, especially old people to take their money.

During the entire movie, Ben laughs about all his murders as he does it all the time it is not something weird for him. It is like going fishing with a bunch of friends, nothing more common. For example, he introduces himself into an older woman’s house and saying he is just there to do an interview about older people’s loneliness and he suddenly scares the old woman until she dies.

The fact that Ben always makes fun of his murders makes the film less violent and more open to people, like black humor, violence is disguised.

The movie was made in only 5 days and the budget was very small in comparaison with other movies that were nominated at Cannes. They won 2 prices so it was quite extraordinary for a small Belgian budget film. This permitted Benoit to become the famous actor he is now, it launched his professional cinema career.

I highly recommend you this movie. if you aren’t Belgian, you will discover some typical aspects of Belgium ; the people, the language and the small cafés.
